Hello and welcome to the 99th Anniversary of the 6 ABC / Dunkin' Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade - the oldest Thanksgiving Day Parade in the Country! The parade will be held on Thursday, November 22, 2018 in Philadelphia, PA.
Currently we are accepting applications for volunteers to serve as balloon handlers, clowns, banner carriers, a limited number of float escorts and our parade day management team (Executive Volunteers).
Planning for the 99th edition of the 6 ABC/ Dunkin Donuts Thanksgiving day Parade is in full swing and this includes you as a potential volunteer for the parade.
It is important that you read all aspects of job descriptions for each position, and we trust that you will follow the registration process accordingly!
Once you register on this page, you will receive an auto-generated email confirming receipt of your registration from our volunteer email address. DO NOT reply to the email, as our volunteer office will not open until October 1 - BUT, we are opening the registration site now for convenience and planning. Deadline to register is September 30, 2018.
If you plan to register as a balloon handler, note that (for this year) NEW BALLOON HANDLERS ONLY must attend a mandatory training session that has been scheduled for the morning of Saturday, November 3, 2018 at WPVI- TV (6ABC) at 10:00AM (If you have participated in the past as a balloon handler, required training will take place every other year - so you will not be required to be trained this year)
Attention Executive Volunteers:
If you plan to register as an Executive Volunteer, a Mandatory meeting has been scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, November 20, 2018 in Center City Philadelphia at 6:30 PM. Make a note in your date book now!!!!

PLEASE NOTE: As stated above, our volunteer office will not open until October 1, 2018, and we have opened this registration web-site up many months earlier than usual for your convenience, so between now and then, register - get your friends and family - your co-workers to register for the time of your life!!!!

Please read the following volunteer areas that are available for parade day so you can make a wise decision as to the capacity and nature you would like to serve as a volunteer!
- BALLOON HANDLER:
You must be 18 years and older and NEW BALLOON HANDLERS MUST attend a MANDATORY balloon handler training session on November 3, 2018 (in the morning) Groups are welcome!!!
Character and Small Balloon Handler
As a Balloon Handler, you will be expected to report on parade day by approximately 5:30AM. (Except for the inflation team that will report at 3:30AM) At that time you will be met by your Balloon Captain, who will direct you to dress in a balloon handler costume. The Captain will then escort you to the balloon that you have been assigned to. Most balloons require 15-40 individuals to carry. Your report location on parade day will be the SONESTA Hotel at 18th and Market Streets.
A Balloon Handler must be at least 18 years of age and weigh at least 110 lbs.
If you volunteer for this position it is urgent that you follow through and show up on parade day; each and every Balloon Handler is needed to safely handle one of our giant helium-filled balloons or one of our new cold-air balloons! A Balloon Handler must be able to walk the 1.8-mile long parade route. If you have a group – make sure that you follow instruction for setting up a group and share the group name for individuals to register under your group name.
REMEMBER: NEW BALLOON HANDLERS MUST ATTEND A MANDATORY TRAINING SESSION ON NOVEMBER 3, 2018 at 10:00 AM AT WPVI-TV (6ABC) – 4100 City Line Avenue, Philadelphia, PA (PAST BALLOON HANDLERS WILL NOT BE RE-TRAINED THIS YEAR)
PARADE DAY REPORT TIME:

Inflation Team reports at 3:30AM
- PARADE CLOWN
You must be 14 years and older. All volunteers who are between 14 and 17 years old MUST be accompanied by an adult! Using your own clown costume WILL NOT be permitted on parade day and you will be sent home.
YOU MUST BE ANIMATED AND FUN FOR THIS POSITION!!! On parade day, you will receive your costume and have clown make-up applied to your face. Your parade responsibilities will end upon the return of your clown costume. Your parade responsibility will involve entertaining the parade audience…out going personalities are encouraged. Please be ready to make everyone smile!!! You cannot use your own clown costume – you must be dressed in one of our clown costumes for security purposes.
Your report location on parade day will be the CENTER CITY SHERATON Hotel located at 201 North 17th Street (17th and Race)
PARADE DAY REPORT TIME:
6:00AM Thanksgiving morning
- FLOAT ESCORT
Be advised, we have only a hand full of positions available, and you must be 14 years old and older. All volunteers who are between 14 and 17 years old MUST be accompanied by an adult!
Float escort positions are limited (30 positions), so we are unable to guarantee that we will be able to fulfill your request, however, a Float Escort is a volunteer who is required to either ride on or walk adjacent to a parade float. Candidates for these positions should ideally possess some degree of theatrical training, along with extensive amounts of energy and enthusiasm!
A Float Escort will be required to report on parade morning at approximately 6:00AM. Upon arrival you will receive your parade costume. Your parade responsibilities will end upon the return of your parade costume. You will be contacted for exact measurements IF chosen for this position.

- BANNER CARRIERS
We have 100 positions in this area, where two people carry a banner either for a star or for a sponsor. This is a prime “solo” opportunity!
This new position is GREAT for a couple – or two good friends, or even individuals. You will have the chance to carry a banner either for a celebrity or a sponsor up the parade route. You will be given a sweatshirt to use as your costume on parade day, while you will need to provide your own black pants and shoes – AND you get to keep the sweatshirt!
Your report location on parade day will be the CENTER CITY SHERATON Hotel at 201 North 17th Street (17th and Race).
PARADE DAY REPORT TIME:
6:30AM Thanksgiving morning
- PARADE DAY MANAGEMENT (EXECUTIVE VOLUNTEERS)
This very important team is for adults only (at least 18 years of age) and will assist in managing the assembly area, dispersal area, and various other operational areas of the parade. Use the password - TURKEY - below to register for the management team.
Executive Volunteer Positions
The Assembly Team is an important group of individuals who assist the Assembly Coordinator in directing arriving parade elements on parade day to their appropriate positions in the Assembly Area.
The Balloon Coordinator is responsible for coordinating balloon inflation, communicating with the contracted balloon vendor[s], helium vendor[s], Balloon Captains, and balloon deflation.
As a Balloon Captain you will be expected to manage a group of volunteers during the assembly of the parade, the line-of-march and balloon deflation. A Balloon Captain will need to be able to walk the 1.8 mile long parade route.
The Band Coordinator is responsible for coordinating Band Captains and directs the unloading/positioning of bands in the Assembly Area.
As a Band Captain, you will be asked to act as a “welcoming voice” for the entire Philadelphia region! Your task is to make them feel comfortable and welcome in our region and to meet them in the Assembly Area on parade day. A Band Captain must be able to walk the 1.8 mile long parade route.
The Dispersal Team is responsible for coordinating the timely flow of elements as they exit the Telecast Area, and onto their waiting vehicles and also assist in parking buses prior to the start of the parade in the dispersal area.
As a Float Captain, you will be expected to manage a group of volunteers during the assembly of the parade, the line-of-march and the dispersal area. A Float Captain must be able to walk the 1.8 mile long parade route.
SONESTA HOTEL OPERATIONS TEAM
This team is responsible for the safe and efficient handling of all volunteers who report to The SONESTA Hotel costuming facility on Thanksgiving Day. Most SONESTA Hotel Operations Team volunteers will be finished on Parade Day by 9:30AM.
SHERATON PHILADELPHIA CITY CENTER HOTEL TEAM
This team is responsible for the safe and efficient handling of all volunteers who report to the Sheraton Philadelphia City Center Hotel costuming facility on Thanksgiving Day. Most Sheraton Philadelphia City Center Hotel Team volunteers will be finished on Parade Day around 10:30AM.
SPECIAL UNIT COORDINATOR
The Special Unit Coordinator is responsible for coordinating Special Unit Captains, and assisting in the positioning of Special Units in the Assembly Area. A Special Unit Coordinator must be able to walk the 1.8 mile long parade route.
SPECIAL UNIT CAPTAIN
As a Special Unit Captain you will be expected to manage a group of performers or a special element during the Assembly of the parade, the line-of-march, and dispersal area. A Special Unit Captain must be able to walk the 1.8 mile long parade route.
